For the past couple of days we have been wandering around Prague in the Czech Republic. Today we venture back to Pskov, Russia for a unique look at shadow people.
While ministering in Pskov, we participated in children's ministry activities, painting projects, and an evening program. Each night during the evening program, the local church believers would perform skits that captured the essence of the Gospel without ever saying a word.
The evening program took place in this amphitheater adjacent to the apartment courtyard. This amphitheatre had been aged by the harsh winters. The brick was exposed, and the benches needed some tender loving care. From a photographic pointed of view, the aged brick provided a wonderful backdrop for taking photographs.
This evening, the team did a skit about the masks we wear when we are around different people. We wear a certain mask with our friends, a different one when someone needs advice, a different one when we are with our significant other and we even try to wear a mask with God.
In this photograph, as the actor comes with one of his many masks to hug and welcome Jesus, Sergei (the actor portraying Jesus), grabs the mask and pulls it off of the young man's face. As he pulls the mask off, you can see the push effect by the shadows on the wall.
What I love about this photograph is that you see the real action in the foreground, but the shadows provide the follow-on action. As I was scanning the skit for pictures, I happened upon the shadows almost by accident. I saw the detail of the hands in the shadow and then structured the photograph to grab both the real-live action and the shadow effect. As you can see, the weathered wall provides a wonderful backdrop for this type of photograph.
I hope you have enjoyed today's photograph of “shadow people“. Tomorrow we will take a look at one of the detail shots that helps tell the story of the work we did here in Pskov. Until tomorrow…
