So…every year…countless people make New Year's Resolutions to prevent themselves from making the same mistakes that they made the previous year. Well, I am no exception. It seems like every year I say I'm going to…
Eat better, work out more, and lose that weight!
That is a fantastic ambition, but so far it has not worked for me. I sat down and thought – WHY? Why has it not worked? Good question. Maybe I lack motivation? Well, I'm going back to school starting Wednesday, so it cannot be completely motivation. What else could it be?
I think it is FEAR. Fear of the unknown. Ten years ago I was coaching high school cross country.
I was a lean, nice, exercising machine. I was in better shape at twenty-five then I was in high school. I can encourage people to go out there and do it, but until I have a goal written down, I seem to provide an excuse.
It's time to change. I need to change my behavior and that is going to require some sacrifice. I am going to have to sacrifice the donuts, watching TV, cruising the internet and the like, if I want to get healthy. I am going to have to get some sleep, prioritize events, and invest some money in the change.
Here's where you can help. You can hold me accountable. You can ask me how my training is coming. You can ask how my sleep is. You can ask how my diet is coming along. All of these things will help me. I have found in the past (and this is for anything), that when I invest my own money I tend to stick to the plan. I am choosing to invest in four races for the 2011 season – here they are:
- The Great Race of Agoura (5K) – March 26th
- Malibu Creek Trail Race (6K) – May 7th
- Disney 5K – September 3rd
- Turkey Trot Trail Race (10K) – Thanksgiving time
There you have it – goals are locked in for the running. I know that these will not be easy, but I know that I have to change something. I want to get back to where I was, and my body will thank me.
Anyone want to join me?
Question: What changes do you need to make in 2011 and will you commit resources to do it?
