I just finished Anne Jackson‘s book Mad Church Disease & it hit me like a ton of bricks. This book is filled with real-world examples of people who have flamed out & recovered and sadly, those who have just flamed out.
This book provides great advice for recognizing areas that may have pushed you dangerously close to the “burnout edge” or that you may be experiencing right now. As I was reading this book, I found myself performing a “state of the union” evaluation on myself and suffice it to say – I didn't always like what I was seeing. It seems that I spend a great deal of time doing rather than being & that is not healthy or safe.
This book forces you to examine the four key areas surrounding burnout:
- Spiritual Health
- Physical Health
- Emotional Health
- Relational Health
Each of the above areas will rock your world. When you come face to face with the reality of who you are in the mirror, you realize that some changes need to be made. I also viewed this book in terms of my occupation. How was my work/life assessment? This is a book that provides insight into the causes of burnout, how to help recover from burnout, how to seek forgiveness from the pain you may have endured, and how to grow from this process. The further questions at the end of each chapter are poignant & form the basis for leading a small group of artists or general people through so that burnout does not occur.
This is a must read for anyone in ministry, whether vocational or volunteer, as well as anyone who wants to maintain sanity in their work/life arena!
