Influence is powerful. Presidents can shape policy, speak actions into existence and do things they probably wouldn't normally be able to do. John Maxwell says "Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less". How am I doing at influencing others?
If I were to survey the landscape and see how we had moved people in or designed areas that benefited people – that is influence because we got it done – they are accepting it & adapting. Working with directors and managers is not easy. Some people are incredibly gifted at helping people move mountains, others. . .not so much. In Facilities, the negotiation of space is almost a daily occurence. There is give & take, but sometimes we just have to take & that certainly doesn't help our reputation.
Reputation – what people think of me. Character – who I am. Do they match? Are they consistent? My word is my bond (Hook reference). Well, I guess I would that they are. I'm certainly not perfect. My dad – his reputation & character were exactly the same at work. He was respected & his influence paved the way for me to get into the company. But, he told me, what you do in here is up to you, I just helped you get here.
This year I prayed that God would allow me to have more influence. The flood of Twitter following's (even if they are bots). The Facebook outreach. The interactions at work. Sometimes maybe I should have re-thought that plan, but when I look back on it, I didn't tell God only give me this type of influence. It was left broad, because I didn't really know where I wanted the influence. God is teaching me so much through so many different things.
Influence – I'm still on that journey!
