As I woke up this morning, I had no idea that within a few short hours I would find myself face-to-face with not just one green dumpster, but TWO. For the month of October, we have been in an all out assault to move people out of the way of some construction activities that need to take place at the beginning of November.
Enter this past weekend's move. We moved approximately 25 people and as I did my walk-through on Saturday & I came upon a few items that (experience has taught me) that people might want because they forgot to tag or what not. Now, against my own intuition, I did not tag the furniture to keep. Enter FIRST big mistake.
Monday morning – TODAY – I arrive, start my walk-through of vacated offices & come upon the. . .duh, duh, duh. . .empty office w/NO file cabinet. Found the mover & he didn't get my note until today regarding what items to keep. Enter the conversation with end user:
Me: "I have some good news & bad news regarding the file cabinet"
User: "Okay what's the bad news"
Me: "We threw out the files in your file cabinet"
Me: "Good news we think we know where the files might be"
User: "Okay" [Explicative]
So, here I am wading through TWO green Waste Management dumpsters (they were small) looking for files & realizing that I don't believe I have found them. Two and a half hours later – no luck, but I did find some other stuff that shouldn't have been thrown out.
How do you keep your heart & head in the right place when you are wading through trash? It's hard. I was saying – I have a Master's Degree & I am wading through trash looking for papers. And there it was the enlightenment I was looking for – sometimes being a servant at work means doing things I wouldn't or shouldn't have to do. It was a lesson in humility & one I so desperately needed to be reminded of. Sometimes I get trapped into thinking that my degrees put me above others or that I am too good for "this or that". Today reminded me that sometimes I need to just serve, whatever that may be, my fellow employees. I guess its a good thing I didn't wear my good dress clothes!
