As an Agape Sponsor, I have tried to lead effectively (spiritually, etc) but beyond leading effectively comes the idea of "who is coming behind you?" Who will be there to take your place when you are not there?
In my own life (as a sponsor) I wonder who is coming behind me when I choose to step down and take a rest from the ministry? Although I have not identified a certain someone, I have an idea of what I am looking for. Since the sponsors lead their crews, it is important to me to choose individuals who meld well with the existing sound crew. Who are willing to work hard, especially when you are usually the first ones off, last ones on. And most of all, who display the characteristic of humility. Perhaps the greatest characteristic I look for in a potential sound team member is this quality. It is usually the one job that receives the least amount of praise. We are asked to do the "impossible" sometimes and it seems that we usually hit our goal. When time is of the essence, everyone (including me) pitches in and works it like nobody's business.
This begs the question – who is coming behind them? The challenge is out. The soon to be senior class has been tasked to find their replacements. I will be looking for them to identify the individuals who can take their place. They will be in charge of finding their replacements, training them, and making sure the group doesn't miss a beat – just a few things. This is the power of leadership.
Looking ahead – who is coming behind me? Don't know, continue to look forward to the future.
