Freakonomics Baby

Steve Levitt, Mr. Freaknomics himself, was the opening keynote today. he discussed how his study of economics is far different then the traditional view of economics. He studies data gathered by non-traditional means to see if emerging patterns are present. he co-authored Freaknomics with Sudir (author of Gang Leader for a Day) and they lookesd at economics of the drug trade in poverty stricken chicago in late 80's. Levitt is working on his second book in which he will study "pimps & prostitutes" to see how they define their pricing structures. As a sociologist by education this fascinates me – perhaps that is why "Gang Leader for a Day" intrigued me so much.
