I recently finished Vince Antonucci's book – I Became a Christian and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt. I have been on a major reading kick lately, probably because I have been on an airplane for the better part of a month.
If there is one book that has profoundly impacted me, this is the book. I read several reviews of people who loved it, so I picked up a copy before my travels. Vince's style and engaging stories will slap you up one side of your face, causing you to think about how you relate to God and others.
Here are some of the takeaways:
- “Prayer is nothing but love” – Augustine
- Are you glowing? — Is Christ shining in me?
- “Prayer is laying my head on God's lap” – Vince
- Am I abiding in God and is that leading me to abounding?
- It's impossible to love God and people in a hurry
- “Touch me, I'm sick” – Vince
- Matthew 25:40 moments
- Am I living Jesus?
- Questions & Whispers
- Elijah Story (1 Kings 17-19)
These are just some of the notes from the book. This book challenges you, engages you, questions why we do what we do. Perhaps the greatest part of this book are the stories. Vince is hilarious – he writes with the simplest words strung together to make a hilarious sentence. For example, he is relating the story of Jesus talking about eating his flesh and drinking his blood so that you will have eternal life, and he says – so Jesus could have coined the phrase “Bite Me” (John 6:51-56). It is little things like this that lead you into moments of laughter. Many times I had to catch myself on the plane, not to laugh out loud – didn't want to scare the other passengers.
This book is a must read. It should be on our book shelves and it should add value to ourselves to others. Look out friends a copy might just be coming your way soon (some have already gotten one).
