(Old post from 2007)
Since December, my church Agoura Bible Fellowship has been pursuing a year long directed focused study on Jesus. Some offer simple advice and ask why are you doing a whole year on Jesus to which we respond, because He is the foundation of our faith and it is an opportunity for us to learn and grow in our understanding of who Jesus is.
Often times we find ourselves in the midst of our busy days and forget to put God at the beginning of our day. I confess that I am still working on rolling out of bed and landing on my knees to begin my day in communion with God, but it is happening more and more (even though I missed this morning).
With that declaration of my missed opportunity this morning, God reached down into my space today and reminded me of His control over time and space. This afternoon I was exiting my apartment to take care of a few things when I locked and closed the door only to realize that my keys were inside the apartment. By God’s direction, a maintenance man was working in the area and I was able to get back inside my apartment within 10 minutes. The only thing I was thinking was how fast could return to MY schedule, but God had other plans. As I was driving towards the freeway I passed a guy pushing a car with an older gentleman behind the wheel and I felt the tug of the Holy Spirit saying “Help”. After a little debate I gave into the promptings, pulled over and went and helped push the car. It turned out the car was out of gas, so I offered to go try and get a gas can with gas. I returned with a couple of gallons of gas, $6.50 less in my pocket, to find the older guy in the same spot resting his car against a truck after it had rolled into it and a nice lady that just wanted to help. We got him gassed up and on his way to a nearby gas station. He offered money for our trouble, but we declined.
As I drove off, I started thinking about everything that had taken place and I looked back and realized that if I had not locked my keys in my apartment then I would have missed the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to tug at my heart to help this person. In the midst of the situation I couldn’t see why it was happening or it was just dumb luck, but since hindsight is usually 20/20 it was God’s provision to remind me why He is in control. God continues to show me that I need to leave more room for Him to work.
