The Game’s Afoot

(Old post from 2007)

Every life tells a story – this is my story of a book in progress. Some wake up when they are five years old and say I am going to be a filmmaker like my friend Dillon. Some wake up each day with a new profession in mind which could play havic if you are in college and mom and dad are paying for it and each semester you keep getting further and further away from graduation — that is not my story, but it does have some of those elements.

My story could be featured on the 6:00 news or win some awards, but it will certainly be interesting because its about changing lives. Our lives are intertwined in that our basic human needs are love, care, and affection with security covering all. As I look back on my life, I had all of those things which I think is why I am writing this book.

My parents always gave me room to grow, experiment and discover what is new about life. Now there were always ground rules, but my parents valued and stressed that the journey I was on was one that is being led by God. Be who you are created to be. My mom always said, “If you are going to dream, you might as well dream big”. I'm pretty sure that I never fully embraced this concept until I started coaching in 1993 following a summer of traveling abroad.

Three degrees later, seven years of high school coaching, and five years of mentorship has led me to discover that I want a chance to further my reach. I want to share moments of who I am and how it is the little things in life that make the greatest imprint on peoples lives. See, my parents, who are probably reading this blog, will come to realize that my thirst for knowledge is not only a God-given gift, but was enhanced by their releasing me to “discover” what is out there. They loved reading and learning, and now I have that same thirst that I hope will penetrate the very core of people's lives. Life is not always about how much money you have in the bank or what prestigious job you have, and those are good things to have, but I challenge the readers of this blog to consider that life is about the legacy we leave behind and how we made a difference in the lives of the people we came into contact with.

So. . . here we are laying face up at the sky realizing that the sky's the limit and if you allow yourself to dream, the sky slowly gives way to the infinite expanse that lies behind the horizon, to a universe with endless possibilities and endless dreams. I ask that as you read further these musings of my life, that you pray for the book that God, not me, is writing and in fact I ask that you pray, not with small hearts and dreams but with the boldness that cries out to use this book to change the lives of people all over the world. I also ask for your encouragement moving forward. The exciting part of this blog is that it is a working copy of my thoughts – sometimes they may be a little sketchy, but other times you may find a nugget that will change your life. Each entry has a comment link – I encourage you to use it and to tell me your stories of impact. This will encourage me to keep pressing on.
