I Think, Therefore I Research

So. . . this morning I had to be to work early for a move project and it is amazing how much work you can get done between 6:30 am and 8:00 am. I checked on the move project, answered emailed, sent PO's to vendors, designed a sample office for a 9:30 am meeting, reviewed my notes for my 8:30 am meeting, and answered some personal email, as well as read some stuff from my Google Reader — all before 8:00 am.

For some people that might be there whole day, but today that little boost not only affords me the opportunity to prep for other stuff, but to catch up on my research of the workplace and business items. I love to read what people are saying out in cyberspace about the workplace or other general business trends. Life in the workplace is an ever-evolving monster, and what is in today may not be in a year from now.

So. . . what are some of the trends in the workplace right now?

  • Strategic Culture Change – companies want to re-invent their workspaces to a more contemporary or modern look as an attraction and retention tool
  • Work/Life Effectiveness – people are clamoring for more options when it comes to balancing their work and personal lives. Companies that want to stay competitive in the marketplace must be willing to think outside of the box for solution-driven applications
  • Flexible Work Options – Due to the rising real estate and gas costs, employers are seeking new approaches in the “way we work“. Our society has made a slow, but decisive move into the mobile working environments. Companies are now considering teleworking, satellite locations, and other options in between as an attraction/retention tool, but more importantly, as a strategic real estate tool.
  • These are just a few of the trends that are surfacing in the research. In addition, placement of employees into areas where their strengths can grow and contribute more effectively are also being considered – and that is a topic for another posting.

Be on the lookout for changes in the workplace, they are coming!
