Last week I attended a seminar for my Facilities designation and I realized that communication is everything. What makes a great communicator? I think it is one who can adequately present the material while referring to notes, but not reading from a given script or the powerpoint.
One of the my presenters referred to the powerpoint, but also engaged the class through discussion, while my other instructor was disorganized, read the manual to us, and had little discussion interaction took place.
While browsing through the channels on television the other night, I came across a show with Kamara Lee Simmons in which she had to deliver an acceptance speech. I was really surprised when she delivered her speech, because she read the bulk of the speech, and had a lot of “um's”. I recognize that some people are not good public communicators, but I would expect a CEO to have a better than average set of communication skills, especially since they are promoting their product.
Okay – here's my point – some people are gifted with performing their jobs as well as being able to articulate the material effectively. However, some people are just not gifted in the area of teaching, but they might be more gifted with one-to-one communication and they should utilize that strength.
