Are We Willing Followers?

As I sit preparing for tomorrow morning, I was struck when I read in Matthew 9:9, how Jesus called to Matthew and said “Follow Me” and Matthew dropped everything and followed Jesus. Sitting here, I wonder if I would have done the same. Would I have thought that Jesus was kidding or talking to someone else or messing with me?

Today we question how God calls to us. Does He speak to us in dramatics? Does He speak to us through our passions? Does He speak to us in the quietness of our hearts? He does all these things and somehow we often miss that call. The call to greatness. The call to being a follower of Jesus with reckless abandon. Do we lay it all down at the foot of the cross? Do we understand how wide His arms were stretched on that cross for us? Do we hear that still small voice inside calling to us to change the way we are, to make a difference, to tell our friend about this relationship with Jesus?

Matthew went excitedly and willingly. My question is what was it like? Had God been working in Matthew's heart beforehand to prepare that divine calling? The real question is “Are we willing followers” or are we kicking and screaming the whole way? Take some time this week to really seek and listen to what God is saying to you, it might just change your life.
