What Could I Do Without?

For the past week, I have been thinking very long and hard about my finances and now I find myself wondering “what do I really need vs. what do i really want“? Often when I housesit, I have time to myself to just relax, read a book, write a little and watch movies that I have on DVD. I wonder now, if I really need certain things.

Do I need. . .

  • TV
  • Cable
  • Wi-Fi
  • T-Mobile Hot Spot Account
  • Books
  • Air Conditioning
  • Washer & Dryer
  • DVD's
  • Computers

The bottom line is I could live with a smaller TV, without HD channels and cable (although I really like my reality shows), without my T-Mobile account, without air conditioning. I live on my computer and when I am housesitting and there is no internet connection, I go crazy. I love DVD's but I could do without them for awhile – I certainly would get more reading done – which brings me to my books – I love them and its like an education – it can't be taken away from you.

Certainly, you have to have food, shelter, clean clothes, a bed and other necessary items, but I think we have lost sight of the fact that some things that we think we need, are just wants. It's certainly something to think on.

    1. Try having your cake and eating it too!
Books, DVD’s and CD’s can be borrowed from the library. So can internet. I am an internet junkie as well as since I work from home it is a must for me (yes!!!).
I have a TV but hardly watch it save for NBA, NHL and HGTV. And the EAGLES. I don’t do network or -sorry to say- reality shows :-)
Several years back I was hugely in debt. It took 4 1/2 years but I got out of it. My mantra was ‘ is it a want or a need’?
      Great mantra…it worked for me.
Also, reading Suze Orman did wonders for me and helped me stay focused.

    2. I find that stuff is just stuff, but sometimes it is really cool stuff :)! I am working my way out of debt and sometimes the sacrifices are okay, and others – I am doing the best I can.
You might want to check out Dave Ramsey’s book – “Total Money Makeover” – it has given me some great new ideas.
